Paducah Symphony Celebrates 250 Years of American Music with Remote Piano Concert and Ice Cream Social

The Paducah Symphony Orchestra will mark 250 years of American music with a free concert and ice‑cream social on Thursday, July 9, at Symphony Hall in Paducah, Kentucky. The event, part of the David and Carolyn Perry Spirio Series, will feature a 45‑minute program performed by a Steinway Spirio Player Piano that is controlled remotely via Bluetooth.

The Steinway Spirio Player Piano is a self‑playing instrument that can receive data from a pianist located anywhere in the world. According to the orchestra’s CEO, Reece King, the piano “has Bluetooth technology in the piano, which allows it to transmit data across the internet, so we can do live events where there’s a pianist in New York or Hong Kong or wherever, and our piano here will play exactly what they’re playing.” The instrument does not use speakers; it reproduces the sound of a traditional piano.

King explained that the use of the Spirio system gives the orchestra “a lot of opportunities to do some really cool things that otherwise we wouldn’t be able to do.” He added that the 45‑minute program will be assembled from pieces recorded by pianists in other locations, rather than streamed live to Paducah, a departure from the June Spirio Series event.

The concert’s repertoire will span 250 years of American music. King said the program will include “everything from jazz—Scott Joplin, Maple Leaf Rag, those types of things— all the way to Leonard Bernstein and classical things.” He also noted that the set will contain pop‑culture references, citing the Forrest Gump theme as an example. The selection aims to cover a broad spectrum of American musical styles, from ragtime to contemporary popular music.

Tickets for the event are free, with a “pay what you wish” option to support the orchestra. They can be purchased on the Paducah Symphony website at tinyurl.com/d62ft3xh. The concert will begin at 5:30 p.m. on July 9, followed by an ice‑cream social.

The Paducah Symphony has scheduled another Spirio Series concert for August 6, though a theme has not yet been announced. The series was originally intended to conclude after the summer, but the organization says the success of the June and July events has opened the possibility of additional performances, potentially during the holiday season.

The July 9 concert is the second appearance of the Spirio Series in the orchestra’s calendar. The first event, held in June, was streamed live to Paducah from a remote pianist. The current event will instead use pre‑recorded material compiled for the Steinway Spirio, allowing the orchestra to present a cohesive program without the logistical demands of live remote streaming.

The Paducah Symphony Orchestra has positioned the Spirio Series as a way to showcase American music while leveraging modern technology. By using a Bluetooth‑enabled player piano, the orchestra can deliver performances that would otherwise require traveling musicians, thereby expanding its programming possibilities.

The free concert and ice‑cream social on July 9 provide a community‑focused celebration of American musical heritage. Attendees can experience a curated selection of pieces ranging from early ragtime to contemporary pop, all performed on a state‑of‑the‑art player piano. The event is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by an ice‑cream social, offering a relaxed setting for audiences to discuss the music.

For those interested in attending, tickets are available through the orchestra’s website, and the event will be held at Symphony Hall in Paducah. The Paducah Symphony Orchestra’s Spirio Series demonstrates how technology can broaden access to diverse musical repertoire while maintaining the acoustic integrity of a traditional piano.
